USB flash drives are this century's floppies, holding everything from personal and medical information to music and pictures and even secure data, with the added advantage of being small and rugged enough for keychain duty. You can even boot from flash drives, just like the old floppies, which, together with portability, universal compatibility, and enough space to host useful tools, makes them ideal recovery devices. Hewlett-Packard's USB Disk Storage Format Tool can quickly and thoroughly format virtually any USB flash drive in a wide range of file systems as well as create bootable USB media. We tested it in Windows 7. This compact tool has an equally compact interface, an efficient little dialog with selections for Device and File system, and an entry field for Volume label, and check boxes for format options, including the ability to create a bootable DOS start-up disk using either internal system files or files at a location you can specify. Other than Start and Close buttons, that's it, not even a Help file, though this tool is easy enough to figure out without one.

We moved the data off of an older 1GB flash drive and inserted the drive in an open USB port. HP USB immediately identified it and its file type, FAT. We chose to reformat it in NTFS and enable compression. We clicked Start, and a pop-up warned us all data on the drive would be lost. We allowed it to proceed, and it formatted the drive in seconds. Clicking Close called up a small dialog with detailed information about the drive.
We then moved the data back to the newly reformatted drive, ejected it, reinserted it, and verified that everything was in order, including our portable apps. HP's little tool is the USB flash drive tool that could, bringing enhanced power and capability to your Windows system at no cost. We recommend it to anyone who uses flash drives.

Bought 4 PNY 16GB USB thumb drives and every time I try to format them, the computer kicks back that they are write protected. Have tried ALL the solutions listed and explained in the 10 forums here, and nothing works to disable the write protection on my machine. Tried diskpart, Command Prompt, and Computer Configuration and nothing resolves my problem. BTW, there's no switch on these USB drives.
Anybody know of a fix? My machine is Dell Optiplex 960 w/6 Gb memory. Thanks for reading my post and possibly helping me, 73s.
Unfortunately when I tried those options earlier on, none solved the problem of disabling the write protection on those USB flash drives. Tomorrow I'll give it another try. BTW, when I placed those same drives into my Windows 7 machine, it would allow me to format and copy folders to the drives. But when inserting those drives into the Windows 10, it won't allow me to copy anything to those drives. It's weird and has me climbing the walls, (except for now; I'm getting ready to watch a movie and relax, lol). Also, thanks sir for placing my post in the right forum; I failed to use my brain.lol And thanks again for replying to my post.
Edit: btw, my machine is Dell Optiplex 960 with Win. After trying the possible solutions in posts 2, 4 and 5; still write protected USB sticks. If I ever come up with the solution to my dilemma, I will come back to 'tenforums' to post the results. I am sure there will be others who will run across this problem and or the fix.
Until then, thanks to you all for the help. Great site here for those who have Windows 10. 73s and thanks again. If they all do it I would contact PNY and look into an RMA. Dfx audio enhancer for windows 7 full version.
I have only had this once and Patriot emailed me a low level formatting tool not available on the Net to fix it, I thought Ufix was the same type of LLF Tool. Computer Type: PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number: Home grown, home schooled.
